About the Journal
FORK is an annual publication dedicated to Web3 themes and issues.
Rooted in technology’s power to re-mediate the institutional dimensions of life, we understand “blockchain” as a dual incitement to action and thought on our increasingly Internetized (if not internationalized) frontiers, giving rise to potentially new forms of both politics and theory. FORK serves as a partial record of these experiments in forms as well as a forum for their extended dispute and deliberation.
Because blockchain interfaces with a broad conceptual ambit — implicating not only computer science and economics, but also critical legal studies, history of science and technology, psychology and sociology, art theory and museology, etc. — we endeavor to welcome a wide variety of approaches in each issue, from the critical to the creative, the technical to the theoretical, the personal to the philosophical.
A fork is the moment when a shared history diverges and two possible futures emerge. In blockchain, it is how communities decide what they value and who they are.
We take this to be a description not only of on-chain governance, but of the political moment in which we find ourselves.
Public blockchains are political institutions, not merely technical ones. They encode rules, distribute power, produce subjects, and make claims about justice.
A journal that takes this seriously must bring the full weight of critical theory, political philosophy, and social science to bear on them.
Fork is interdisciplinary without being undisciplined. We publish rigorous work — theoretical, empirical, historical — that engages the Interchain on its own terms while refusing to treat its technical categories as given.
